Congrats to Capt. Richard Brochu and the Florida Fishing Academy. They won the “Blue Friend of the Year” Award from the Loggerhead Marinelife Center. The award was announced — and presented — Nov. 7 at a sold-out luncheon at the PGA National Resort and Spa.
We’re proud of Capt. Rich and the great work FFA does. But we’re also beaming that veterans of our Guy Harvey Conservation Village stood out as a finalist in each of the Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s award categories. We’ve always said we drew from the best to assemble the Guy Harvey Conservation Village at the Rock the Oceans Tortuga Music Festival, and the recognition they got from Loggerhead Marinelife, another Tortuga veteran organization, proves it.
Here they are:
Faith Blackall, age 8, was a finalist for the Blue Hatchling Youth Award. Faith, who is with the Ocean’s Daughter Conservation Alliance, was nominated for her Orion’s Guardians project, which includes posting informational videos on YouTube.
Sea Delight LLC and Sea Turtle Conservancy were both nominated for Blue Business of the Year. Sea Delight is a leader in responsible seafood sourcing and Sea Turtle Conservancy has made a huge impact both with its research — the Tour de Turtle is a great tracking project — and conservation work. Kudos to Sea Delight’s Adriana Sanchez-Lindsay and Sea Turtle Conservancy’s Becca Gelwicks. We should note Adriana was a double-nominee as she was also a finalist for Blue Friend of the Year as well.
Angela Smith of Shark Savers/WildAid was a nominee in the Blue Ambassador of the Year Award. Angela’s been at our Guy Harvey Conservation Village two years in a row and her organization has done exceptional work in shark conservation.
The last — and top — award presented, the Eleanor Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award, had two Conservation Village veterans in the ranks of nominees. One was artist and conservationist Wyland, who was at the 2013 Rock the Oceans Tortuga Music Festival. The other was winner Dr. Eugenie Clark from Mote Marine. Dr. Clark has not been at Tortuga, but Mote had an exhibit in 2013.
Congrats to all the nominees and winners. We’re proud to be associated with you.
And special thanks to Loggerhead Marinelife Center for recognizing the outstanding work these organizations do on behalf of our oceans!
